Faculty of EconomicsAn Economic Agent

Economics is the study of the way in which scarce resources are allocated to competing uses. These resources may be raw materials used to produce goods, dollars in a government budget or hours in a student’s study plan. The incentives facing an economic agent have a strong effect on their choice of allocation and are therefore important in the study of economics. Similarly important is the accurate measurement of economic quantities and this aspect is also stressed.

In macroeconomics the performance of the economy as a whole is studied with particular reference to the causes and effects of fluctuations in the level of economic activity. In the study of econometrics appropriate statistical techniques are used to estimate economic models, test hypotheses of interest and predict the future values of economic quantities.
